I grew up listening to music. Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers were two of my all time favorite singers as a child. My dad was a gambler and Kenny Rogers song, the Gambler, was close to his heart. The gambler tells a story of learning to let go in life. The lyrics are a metaphor for the challenges we face in life. We can choose to hang on to things and people which no longer serve us or we can choose to walk away. Letting go can be so difficult. It takes incredible strength and courage to take a new path over the one that is most familiar.
Today, I quit my job. I explained to my manager I don't let anyone speak to me with disrespect. I choose to be around people who empower me, invest in me, and are living their best lives. Negativity is a cancer it is highly contagious and I want no part of it. I took off my apron and said goodbye. I left the store feeling FANTASTIC as I left a toxic death trap. No job, no person, no career is worth feeling abused, berated, or demoralized. You are worth more than that and deserve more.
Kenny Rogers says:
He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"
So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done
Every gambler knows
That the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away
And knowin' what to keep
'Cause every hand's a winner
And every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for
Is to die in your sleep"
Learning to walk away is the key to a better life. Let go! Start over and learn to be happy! Today, I am living my best life because I am investing in me. I have self respect, self love, and I know I am worthy of incredible things. I hope you chose you today and let go of those things which are not serving you well.
